FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is A Psychotherapist And Psychologist The Same?
No. A psychotherapist is trained specifically in 'talk therapies' to help change your thinking patterns by using unconscious processes and can work with you long term. Some psychologists say they offer psychotherapy but most have not completed the training. A psychologist generally diagnoses mental health conditions and short term therapy.
How Regularly Should I See My Therapist?
This depends on what issues you are tackling, for brief asssitance it may be 3-6 sessions. If you are working with trauma, child hood issues or mental health disorders then you may require ongoing therapy for a year or more. It all depends on what you want and need. There is no lock in contract.
What's The Difference Between Psychotherapy And Counselling?
They are very different. Counselling generally focuses on your current problem whilst making goals and looking ahead. Psychotherapy focuses on examining your past experiences to better understand and interpret your current behaviours and emotions.
Why Did My Last Therapist Not Help Me?
My new clients often tell me that therapy has failed for them in the past, this is usually due to having a poor connection with the therapist or they were using a style of therapy that didn't suit you. If you don't have a connection with your therapist please find another one, therapists are trained to encourage clients to seek the best treatment.
What About Mental Health Care Plans?
Psychotherapists don't use mental health care plans. The cost of the session is less than the gap payment of what you would normally pay for psychology.
